Extraction logic

Extraction logic allows you to display the selected options of multi-select question types as answer options of the follow-up question.

For example, consider that the source question asks "Which is your favorite smartphone brand?" with following answer options:

Apple
Samsung
Motorola
OnePlus

If the respondent selects any of the answer options then, a follow-up question should appear asking to rate the selected smartphone brand.

How do I set up extraction logic?

To set up extraction:

Go to: Login » Surveys (click on a survey) » Edit.
Add all the required questions to your survey.
Hover over the question on which you wish to apply logic and click on logic.

A pop-up will appear.
Click on Extraction.

Click on the drop-down next to 'Extract' and select the choices you want to carry forward.
Click on the drop-down next to 'to question type' and select the question type for your follow-up question
Click on Save Extraction Logic button.

The extracted question will appear below the source question. You can change the question text as per your need.

How does extraction logic work while taking the survey?

In the above image, when the respondent selects Samsung as his/her favorite smartphone brand a new question asking "why do you like Samsung?" with an open-ended single line text box appear on the next page. The respondent can enter text to specify the reason for choosing the answer option.

Can I re-order the extracted question?

Yes. It is possible to re-order the extracted question to anywhere in the survey after the source question (the question from which you extract). However, once you re-order the extracted question you will need to set up branching logic on the source question to go to the appropriate question. Can I extract answer options from a matrix question?

Yes, matrix extraction is also available. You would have to select the options that you want to include in the extraction

What type choices can be carried forward using extraction?

All: Carry forward every single answer option in the question.
Displayed: Carry forward the answers that were displayed to the respondent.
Not Displayed: Carry forward the answers that were not displayed to the respondent. For more information on 'Show / hide answer options' please click here.
Selected: Carry forward the answer options selected by the respondent.
Unselected: Carry forward the answer options not selected by the respondent
